Anaesthesiology Refresher Short Course - Contact Tuition

The practice of anaesthesia has been revolutionised in the last two decades, due to the availability of new drugs and monitoring facilities. However, the basic principles for safe management have remained the same. This course will not only serve as preparation to your examinations in anaesthesia, but will also serve as a basic guide in the future.

Who Should Enrol

All general practitioners who administer anaesthesia as well as candidates enrolled on the Diploma in Anaesthetic of the College of Medicine.

Course Design

The course consists of 2 parts:

  • A 2-day interactive workshop based on participatory learning methods suitable for adult learners.
  • A self-study component. The comprehensive self-study manual has been developed by leading experts to support learners doing the anaesthesiology refresher course.

Course Content

The course material is presented in a bound format and is comprehensive eliminating the need for other text books or study material.

  • Introduction.
  • Applied physiology.
  • Anaesthesia equipment.
  • Inhalation agents.
  • Muscle relaxants.
  • Intravenous induction agents.
  • Airway management.
  • Administration of anaesthesia.
  • Fluid and blood transfusion.
  • Complications during anaesthesia.
  • Regional anaesthesia.
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
  • Cardiovascular disease.
  • Pulmonary disease.
  • Endocrine.
  • Renal failure and liver failure.
  • Paediatric anaesthesia.
  • Trauma.
  • Diverse problems.
  • Post-operative analgesia.
  • Neurosurgery.
  • Obstetric anaesthesia.


Participants are assessed on the self-study component of the course through means of a multiple-choice questionnaire. These will be submitted to the Foundation for Professional Development for assessment


Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Healthcare Professionals for 30 CEU’s on Level 2.


To qualify for the certificate of completion for this short course, participants should fully attend the workshop as well as successfully complete the assessment process.
