Hypertension is one for the most important modifiable risk factors for the development of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. It was estimated that, in 2000, up to 80 million African were hypertensive and this figure is expected to double by the year 2025. Nevertheless, in most Africans hypertension goes unrecognized and undiagnosed, and worse still, even on treatment, blood pressure in the vast majority of patients remain uncontrolled. As such, Hypertension has been declared by the African Union as one of the greatest health challenges on the continent. Hypertension continues to be the “Silent Killer. This course will assist healthcare professionals in the public and private sectors with evidence-based and comprehensive management of hypertension.

Course Design

This course is an online based course and participants are expected to submit their assessment within 3 months.


Participants will receive a certificate of completion for this short course once successfully completing the assessment component.


Participants are assessed on the self-study component of the course through means of a multiple-choice questionnaire.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Classify the different types of blood pressure for adults
  • Discuss factors influencing the risk related to Hypertension
  • Learn about the causes of Hypertension
  • Discuss the natural history of Hypertension
  • Learn more about the measurement of blood pressure
  • Describe the minimum tests to be done in hypertensive patients
  • Learn more about the drugs for treatment of Hypertension
  • Learn about the drug preferences in specific hypertension-related complications
  • Discuss the Hypertensive Crisis (Malignant hypertension)
  • Discuss Hypertension in patients with HIV
