Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education and Leadership - E-learning

The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education and Leadership aims to develop suitably qualified leaders in Health Professions Education (HPE) to meet the increasing complexity of HPE in a fast and continuously changing educational landscape.

This qualification is in response to the increasing demand for individuals with specialised knowledge and leadership skills in order to best educate 21st century health professionals and ensure the quality of health care in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This qualification has been developed in partnership with Sub-Saharan Africa-FAIMER Regional Institute (SAFRI).

Who Should Enrol

This qualification is aimed at health professions educators and practitioners who wish to further develop their leadership, management and education knowledge and skills in a global and inter-professional context.

Course Design

The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education and Leadership is a part-time distance (e-Learning) qualification consisting of written reflections, written work-based assignments, video material of practice & reports as well as an innovative research project.

Course Content

Students need to complete 3 compulsory modules, a research project and 1 elective module.

Compulsory Modules:

  • Leadership and Mentoring in HPE
  • Instructional Design in HPE
  • Project Management and Evaluation
  • Innovation Research Project

Elective Modules:

Select one of the following:

  • Scientific Peer Review
  • Faculty Development for Health Professionals

Admission Requirements

To enrol for this qualification, potential students must possess:

  • An approved undergraduate degree in health sciences.
  • An equivalent qualification, or Be deemed suitably qualified through a recognition of prior learning.

Exit Level Outcomes

On achieving this qualification, a learner will be able to:

  • Demonstrate skills in leadership, self-reflection and mentoring.
  • Apply leadership, management, pedagogical, project management and evaluation principles in the context of HPE.
  • Create, adapt, implement and evaluate learning activities and materials.
  • Understand and apply the principles of instructional design within a HPE context.
  • Conduct, implement and evaluate an education innovation research project.


Participants need to submit all summative and formative assessments. A 50% pass rate is required for all assessment opportunities to successfully complete and meet the requirements.

Summative Assessment
Summative assessment includes:

  • For Leadership and Mentoring in HPE: a reflective portfolio of evidence.
  • For Instructional Design: A report with a completed module alignment template, with additional materials to support evidence of alignment of a chosen module.
  • For Project Management and Evaluation: a portfolio of evidence related to an education project
  • For the Faculty Development for Health Professionals in HPE: Theme 1: Core Concepts of Faculty Development (FP)
  • A report of the overarching Innovation Research Project (subject dependent)

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment methods include:

  • Written reflections
  • Written assignments
  • Video material and accompanying report/s


Successful candidate will be awarded with a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education and Leadership.


FPD will award successful participants with a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education and Leadership on completion of this formal registered qualification should they successfully complete the assessment process. The minimum period for completion is 12 months and the maximum period is 24 months.

  • SAQA number 102056, NQF Level 8, 120 Credits
  • Council on Higher Education accredited
  • Accredited for 30 Ethical CEU'S on Level 2.
