Short Course in Spirometry Testing - Contact Tuition



Some respiratory diseases slow the speed of expired air; others reduce the volume of air that can be inspired and then exhaled. To detect these impairments Spirometry is the most common type of pulmonary function test used.

The FPD Spirometry short course prepare the Healthcare Professional for the challenges of testing and screening.

The course complies with the SAQA Unit Standard 252125 to screen and evaluate worker respiratory health of workers for their ability to perform certain tasks or detect impairment in the Occupational Health setting.

Course Content

  • Basic respiratory anatomy and physiology
  • A background to spirometry and spirometers
  • Spirometry equipment quality control, calibration and verification
  • The flow volume curve and measurements of Spirometry
  • Cleaning and equipment maintenance
  • Reference values
  • How to prepare a subject for spirometry, indications and contra-indications
  • Technique and achieving technically acceptable results
  • Normal values and basic normal vs. abnormal results
  • Recording and reporting results
  • Reversibility studies
  • Practical spirometry


Accredited according to the HPCSA CPD Guidelines for Health Professionals - for a total of 30 clinical points on Level 2.


To qualify for the certificate of competence, participants should fully attend the workshop Successfully complete the theoretical and practical assessment and successfully complete a Portfolio of Evidence.
