Introduction

Some respiratory diseases slow the speed of expired air; others reduce the volume of air that can be inspired and then exhaled. To detect these impairments, Spirometry is the most common type of pulmonary function test used. The FPD Spirometry short course prepare the Healthcare Professional for the challenges of testing and screening. The course complies with the SAQA Unit Standard 252125 to screen and evaluate respiratory health of workers for their ability to perform certain tasks or detect impairment in the Occupational Health setting.

Course Design

3-day Interactive workshop with lectures and practical exercises. Theory and practical assessments. Portfolio of Evidence to be submitted.

Course Content

  • Basic respiratory anatomy and physiology
  • A background to spirometry and spirometers
  • Spirometry equipment quality control, calibration and veri?cation
  • The ?ow volume curve and measurements of Spirometry
  • Equipment cleaning and maintenance
  • Reference values
  • How to prepare a subject for spirometry, indications and contra-indications
  • Technique and achieving technically acceptable results
  • Normal values and basic normal vs abnormal results
  • Recording and reporting results
  • Reversibility studies
  • Practical spirometry

Accreditation

Accredited according to the HPCSA CPD Guidelines for Health Professionals - for a total of 21 clinical points on Level 2.

Certification

To qualify for the certi?cate of competence, participants should attend the workshop, complete the theoretical and practical assessment and successfully complete a Portfolio of Evidence.

Admission Requirements

A matric/grade 12 certi?cate or equivalent quali?cation. Booking is essential.

Payment must be settled before training is undertaken. Access to a clinic or facility to complete Portfolio of Evidence.
