Introduction

The Research Methodology short course aims to equip participants with basic research and writing skills to do research in your field. You will be guided step-by-step to successfully design a research proposal, whether for the purpose of postgraduate studies or other research projects.

Researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students that want to learn more about basic research and writing skills and want to learn how to design a research proposal.

Learning Outcomes

Once you’ve completed the learning activities for this short course you should be able to:

  • Identify a suitable research approach for your intended research
  • Write in an academic sound way
  • Identify and define the research problems, purpose and objectives of the research
  • Conduct a literature review on the research topic
  • Demonstrate knowledge, skills and applied competencies in scientific research and the nature, methods and process of conducting quantitative and qualitative research
  • Consider ethical principles in research
  • Develop a research proposal

Course Design

This is an e-learning course. Participants have 6 weeks to complete all learning and assessment activities online.

Course Content

Participants will be guided through this course by working through the information provided and the links to videos and other learning resources. There are 4 study units in this course:

  • Introduction to research and research approaches
  • Academic writing
  • Ethics and integrity in research
  • Writing your research proposal

Assessment

In this short course you will have several opportunities to be assessed which includes posts to the discussion forum, assignment and quizzes, amongst others. You will have various learning activities to engage with and tasks to complete. In the end, these tasks will help you to design the research proposal which is the final summative assessment.

Certification

To qualify for the certificate of completion for this short course, participants should complete all learning activities online and successfully complete the assessment process.

Accredited with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). Credits: 4
