The business of providing technical assistance and health system strengthening is a very complex and multifaceted undertaking and often times our leaders and ‘manager leaders’ encounter great challenges. However, efforts to improve our public health system has helped our department develop some of the most unique and versatile leaders. Our TA leaders offer 5 useful tips that help to foster commitment among team members.

  1. Focusing on the goal and at every opportunity leaders are encouraged to communicate our goal. This help avoid diverting attention be clear on goals and steps to get there.

  2. Revisit reasons why we do what we do. In times of waning commitment of leaders, it is encouraged to talk to leaders individually and review why we are here and the reasons. While discussing this, your approach must be flexible based on what motivates each individual. A leader recognizes that not one size fits all.

  3. Refocus energy. We boast some of the most eager and energetic leaders, but to avoid ‘energy leaks’, it is helpful to redirect energies toward common objective. When necessary work closely with leaders and monitor and sustain progress.

  4. Inspire, Lead and Care

    • Inspire by team building

    • Lead by example

    • Care for your leaders

  5. Have a sense of humor. One of the driving forces of fostering ongoing commitment among leaders is to foster a space for humor. Humor allows for comic relief, and stress relief in a very demanding and fast paced environment.
