Foundation for Professional Development terminate relationship with Foundation for a Smoke-Free World

Published 16 September 2022

In March 2021 the Foundation for Professional Development (FPD) had received funding from the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (FSFW) for a study to investigate the interaction between smoking and Covid-19 in South Africa.

Importantly, FPD was not aware that FSFW is funded by multinational tobacco company, Phillip Morris International (PMI). PMI uses a strategy of funding scientific and medical research institutions to try and gain legitimacy for its products as a health solution.

After learning about the relationship between PMI and FSFW FPD has immediately terminate their relationship with FSFW.
